The "2024 English Bootcamp - Highway to U.S. Colleges" jointly organised by HKMIEF and Education USA was a pivotal experience that I stumbled upon while browsing through the school webpage announcements. I was interested in strengthening my interview skills and was curious about the differences between US universities and that of UK. I felt a pull to join this valuable event.

Midway, we were plunged into an exploration of pathways within U.S. higher education and trainings that aimed at enhancing our English speaking and writing skills.  A standout moment came with the personal statement writing contest in which ten student winners could secure their spots in an esteemed summer program, including two Form 5 students from HTC.

The selection process for the summer program highlighted the importance to write a unique and gripping personal statement. I also came to see how personal statements can vary so much from one to another. One might highlight one’s academic achievements, while one might talk about life experiences and shine a light on one’s intense interest for a particular subject.

After the event had passed, it dawned on me that understanding what interviewers seek in responses and shaping my answers accordingly was crucial. I am glad that I had this experience to refine my language abilities and equip myself with the confidence and mindset necessary to pursue my academic goals on an international scale.
